Greatest Caprice Chases

Serving as a law enforcement vehicle for many years, it's not a surprise that the Caprice/Impala also made its way to the box office.
With a big and bulky look that fills up the whole screen, it performs well in any fictional car chase too.
Watching the many bumpy rides in motion pictures as well as in real life photos ("America's wildest police videos"), it's pretty clear that the powerful frame and body of these old cruisers can take a lot of abuse..

Here are some memorable Caprice/Impala chase scenes:

V -season 2 episode "dreadnought" 1984, Warner Bros
The two heros driving a two-tone Impala are chased by fake cops in a Plymouth Fury. Features some whole-body-out-of-the-window-shooting and flying hubcaps.

To live and die in L.A. 1985, MGM
As good guys go bad there is nothing stopping them escaping the feds, not even driving on the wrong side of the freeway! The chase featured in this 80s hard-boiled cop flick took over forty stunt men and six weeks to complete and is considered by many to be the best Caprice/Impala chase around!

Out for Justice 1991, Warner Bros
Not a very long chase but still fun to watch. Steven Seagal's brown Caprice takes a lot of abuse pursuing the bad guys in a Lincoln. Seagal further demonstrates what to do if an 18-wheeler should block your way: show your badge and look really mean!

Striking Distance 1993, Columbia Pictures
The chase starts only five minutes into the movie. Bruce Willis driving a grey 9C1 goes after the bad guy in a Ford Crown Victoria. The whole police squad follow in white Impalas as cars fly over bumpy roads, crash in to milk vans and lose their hubcaps in 60 mph.

Die Hard -with a vengeance 1995, 20th Century Fox
Once again Bruce Willis (or more likely: his stunt driver) shows that he sure knows how to handle a Caprice as he and his sidekick hijack a NYC taxi cab and take a slightly different shortcut through Central Park in order to save time in heavy traffic.

Night Hunter 1995, New Concorde Home Video
Two Caprice Cop Cruisers chase Don "The dragon" Wilson. Though it's a low budget movie, the chase is quite ok.

Need For Speed III, hot pursuit 1998, Electronic Arts
Dont be surprised to find yourself looking into the tail lights of a Chevrolet Caprice as you drive your fancy sports car at top speed. The cops pursue you aggressively, bumping into your fenders and use their cars to box you in. The outcome of the chase all depends on your own driving.

Dark Blue 2002, United Artista
In this film the lead charachter, played by Kurt Russell, practices some really hard driving through the 1992 L.A. riots in a late 80s Chevrolet Caprice, searching for suspects driving a 1970s Lincoln. The chase includes a very nice 180 degrees fishtailing turn.

Some memorable quotes:
Chief:"Tell me you've got the suspects in the trunk"
Russell:"Nah, my trunk's full of nothing but a spare tire and dirty underwear"

Russell:"...by tomorrow morning those two young bugs will be dressed up and strapped across the hood of my Chevy.."
